Pushing Debt out of the Unconscious, a ritual

Pushing Debt out of the Unconscious, a ritual

Text from A Soft Spot in a Hard Place, an edited book by Zachary Gough. I was at a Strike Debt meeting in New York in the summer of 2012 when two women came up to me and said, “Are you the Cassie that makes art about debt?” And I said, “Yeah.” And they said, “We’ve been looking for you.” A different kind of debt collection. These two women were Laurel Ptak and Leigh Claire La Barge, curators of To Have and to Owe. After several meetings with the duo, I realized that this project was more than symbolic. Laurel was...
Feminist 3D Reproduction

Feminist 3D Reproduction

Feminist Reproduction designed by the Feminist Economics Department, in collaboration with Miki Foster. http://wemakemeteorsnotmoney.tumblr.com/ In something like a post-apocalyptic TED talk, the FEMINIST REPRODUCTION workshop demonstrates concrete possibilities for new ways of learning, understanding and using technology to reorient ideas of value. We will deal with the way we work with machines as we question how machines work to change what is possible, what is expected, what is normalized, and what we value. What is ‘extruded’ in the workshop is the development of a feminist way of participating with and questioning technology, value, and progress. We will use the ‘Replicator...
Barter Checks

Barter Checks

These barter checks are part of a new type of credit rating, where one can accrue ‘cred’ by following through with their promises, as documented through these checks. Little promissory notes with images of crying stock brokers in 2008, they are available for barter or sale. They were printed and bound at Guide to Kulchur with support provided by SPACES in Cleveland.

Give Me Cred! (under the table)

For The Makeover Exhibition at Southern Exposure in San Francisco in 2015, I built an office under a very large table. In the office, Give Me Cred, an alternative credit rating agency produced auxiliary credit reports for people who were having trouble getting an apartment lease, a job, or a loan due to a low credit score or no credit score. “Our agent will meet with you to understand your personal story, and we will work with you to translate your experience into a document that you can use to prove your trustworthiness to a potential landlord, employer, or lender.”...
Affordable Luxury SF Real Estate

Affordable Luxury SF Real Estate

Very excited to be a part of an exhibition at ProArts in Oakland about Home this summer. As a Bay Area resident with no address, it is a very potent time for me to think about home. (I’m not homeless, but I’m not paying rent anywhere.) Last summer I was walking around downtown SF with Aurora Crispin, when we passed the Salesforce Tower construction site. We asked the construction workers if they would give us some of what they were digging up. Like the real SF below the new SF. They told us to get a truck because they hit...
